Music therapist Peter Jampel is the director of the Baltic Residence Treatment Center, a mental health clinic in Brooklyn, New York. Jampel uses all kinds of music to engage mentally ill adults, substance abusers, and ex-prisoners. "Some people think music therapists simply use Mozart to calm an agitated patient or cheer up a depressed one," says Jampel. "In fact, my profession is more about engaging people as performers than as passive listeners." To that end, he has organized, and plays in, a band that includes 12 instrumentalists and eight singers drawn from the center's clientele. The band is more than just fun. Jampel aims to have his patients return to the world of work. With dozens of contacts at local arts employment agencies, recording studios, cable television companies, and radio stations, he's the middleman between his talented clients and the city's bustling arts industry.
