In The News This Week … Mar. 27–Apr. 2, 2005: Hello Kitty?

Good news for people who like cats, but who are allergic to them and – as an acquaintance commented – for those who are indifferent to cats, but want to date people who own them.

According to a letter published online in the journal Nature Medicine, on March 27, 2005, scientists have "designed and tested a chimeric human-cat fusion protein" (sounds scary, doesn't it?). The newly-created compound, which was created to help conquer cat allergies, is part major cat allergen (Fel d1) and part human antibody (IgG Fcγ1).

The compound, called GFD, when tested in mice bred to be allergic to cats, virtually shut down the typical, unpleasant reactions associated with the allergy – itching, runny eyes, and sneezing. Researchers hope that such chimeras may one day help protect people from many different allergies.
