In The News This Week … Oct. 9–15, 2004: Durex Global Sex Survey Report

Well, the Durex condom people are up to it again! The 2004 Global Sex Survey Report, the eighth of its kind, has just been released.

This year's survey had more than 350,000 respondents in 41 countries, who answered questions on sex-related issues. There were lighter questions, such as "sexiest features" (of 15 options, the one receiving the most votes, 15%, was the derrière, aka the butt, the bottom, the back-of-your-front). And there were more serious items, such as "age when first received sex education" (global average, 13.1 years) and "who should teach sex education" (most respondents, 47%, said parents/guardians).

But now for the item you've all been waiting for: frequency of sex. The 2004 results show that people are having sex an average of 103 times per year. Interestingly, the 2003 survey (which summarized the responses of 150,000 people in 34 countries) reported that people had sex an average of 127 times per year! (Clearly, respondents in the additional seven countries featured in the 2004 report are dragging the 34 countries from 2003 down.)

So who comes out on top in 2004? The French, at 137 times per year. Interestingly, their performance is also down from 2003, when they were at 138 times per year. And despite this number, in 2003, they were not at the head of the pack, but rather were seventh from the top.

And who comes out on the bottom in 2004? The Japanese, at 46 times per year. This is also well below last year's lowest, which was Singapore, at 96 times per year.

But where do we North Americans stack up in this love sandwich? Americans ranked 15th, at 111 times per year (down from 118 times per year in 2003 – but up from 25th place) and Canadians ranked 20th, at 108 times per year (down from 119 times per year in 2003 – but up from 23rd place!). At least we're all above the average!

Nonetheless, I'm sure you'll all try harder so we can keep our end up in next year's survey.
