When you are considering quitting, here are a few things to keep in mind: • If you're unsure whether
you're making the right decision, talk to someone
you trust. They can provide you with an outsider's
perspective about whether they think that quitting
is the best thing, or whether they believe that you
are overreacting to something that's going on in
your life or at work.
• Get your family's buy-in.
They will be affected by your decision, and will
be a source of financial and emotional support if
you end up between jobs.
• Unless finances are not
a problem, before you quit, have a job lined up,
or at the very least, start laying the groundwork
for a new job by sending out résumés
and networking.
You may also want to see whether, where you live,
your reason for quitting is one that will allow you
to collect unemployment benefits. If you don't have
a job lined up, look at your budget to see if you
can reduce your living expenses. And remember: Experts
usually suggest having enough money to cover three
months worth of living expenses.
• Follow the instructions
on how to make
a graceful exit, e.g., give as much notice
as required.
• Stay positive and confident
by doing things like looking after yourself, staying
active, and not dwelling on the job you're leaving.
Negativity will make you continually question yourself
and may bring you down in an interview situation
when you need to be putting on a strong show. Discuss This ArticleHave something you'd like to say? Tell us what you think! Read and post comments for this article. Like this article? Read more!
