Abilene is located in central Texas, 150 miles (241 kilometers) west of Fort Worth. It is the county seat of Taylor County, and has a population of 115,930. Abilene is home to a host of historic attractions. Newcomers can participate in a historic downtown walking tour or the Frontier Heritage Tour. Frontier Texas! presents the story of the region from 1780-1880, and uses multimedia technology to bring episodes like a wolf attack, a buffalo stampede, and a saloon shootout vividly to life. Another excellent attraction is the Grace Museum, which houses a history museum, art museum, and children's museum all in one location. Looking for more family-friendly attractions? Try a trip to the Abilene Zoo or the National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature, which exhibits the works of today's best children's book illustrators. You can also visit the 12th Armored Division Memorial Museum to learn about one of the most feared divisions in World War II, drive out to nearby the Buffalo Gap Historic Village, or visit the ruins of an 1851 army post on Fort Phantom Hill. Abilene locals are passionate about motorsports, and you'll find thrilling races at the Abilene Star Dodge Dragstrip, the Abilene Speedway, and Abilene Raceway Park, along with exciting motorcross events at the Mesquite Hills MX Park. Other recreational pursuits include golf, pool, billiards, camping, fishing, and more. Tired out from all the activity? You can enjoy a great performance by the Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra, the Abilene Community Theatre, or check out the student theater productions at each of the city's three universities. For art lovers, there's the Center for Contemporary Arts, which houses four galleries, ten studios, and displays the works of 75 member artists. With everything this city has to offer, Abilene is a great place to call home! See our 15 Jobs in Abilene, Texas Websites for this CityGovernment:
