While some people simply visit memorials to honor great people or events, the people of Ajax live in one! Named for the HMS Ajax, which was one of three ships involved in the first significant British naval victory of the Second World War, Ajax proudly displays pieces of her namesake – such as the ship's bell and one of the anchors – throughout town. You'll also see streets named for sailors who served on the HMS Ajax and trees adorned with plaques commemorating veterans.

In addition to their proud naval heritage, the 74,000 residents also boast a beautiful waterfront on Lake Ontario. Largely undeveloped, the waterfront provides a natural retreat for those who want to hike or bike along its 30 kilometers (19 miles) of trails. Nearby, the Greenwood Conservation Area is a great spot for catching rainbow trout or for rambling explorations.

And being part of the Greater Toronto Area, Ajax is within commuter distance – only 40 minutes east – of the bright lights of the big city. And for the bright flashing lights of the slots, you can always head to the casinos in nearby Orillia and Port Perry.
