Alaska

Talk about adventure! Talk about excitement! Small, isolated towns, stark mountains, fjords, glaciers, the Arctic Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, Kodiak Island (with it's huge bear population), and the 1,000 mile archipelago of the Aleutian islands! If you're tired of the same old thing every day, then Alaska may be the place for you.

The capital city is Juneau, which has a small population of only 30,711 (and 32 gold mines) is set on the Alaskan Panhandle. If you want to explore glaciers, this city is a great location as it's home to the Juneau Icefield. (The Mendenhall Glacier is just 13 miles from downtown.) For the water lovers, the sea kayaking is amazing – it has to be tried to be believed – and, if you don't mind the cold water, you can even scuba dive. For the landlubbers, there's always hiking or great skiing in the winter.

Anchorage is by far the largest city in Alaska. With 260,283 people, 42% of the population of the state lives here. Anchorage has all the modern conveniences of a major city and the nightlife, too – except there isn't much of a night in the summer! But even with all the convenience, the city is a great starting point for camping, hiking, or any other outdoor activities that you might think like golf or gold panning. In the winter, you have access to great locations and facilities for skiing, skating, snowmobiling, and something called skijoring, which is like cross-country skiing and dogsledding combined.

All of these places may sound adventurous, but, to me, Kodiak Island is the biggest adventure. Being on an island with only air and sea access and sharing it with 3,000 of the world's largest land carnivores isn't something you get to do everyday. Beyond that fact, Kodiak Island has some of the best hiking and fishing available in the state.

So if you are looking for a life where adventure and nature are bigger than the stress life can hand you, try out Alaska.
