Albany, Georgia

 

Albany is located along the Flint River in southwestern Georgia's Dougherty County. The city is located 87 miles (140 kilometers) southeast of Columbus and 97 miles (156 kilometers) north of Tallahassee, Florida.

You can learn about area history at the Thronateeska Heritage Center, located in an historic railroad station, and see historical exhibits and learn about civil rights history at the Albany Civil Rights Movement Museum at Old Mt. Zion Church.

When residents want a bit of culture, they can take in performances of the Albany Symphony Orchestra, Albany Chorale, or Albany Ballet Theater, or stroll the galleries of the Albany Museum of Art.

In town, you can keep the kids occupied at the Parks at Chehaw, a 100-acre (41-hectare) site that includes a wild animal park, campgrounds, nature trails, and a huge play area for kids. For a day in the park, you can also head to RiverFront Park, which includes the Turtle Grove Play Park. They younger set will also like the combination aquarium-discovery center, the Flint RiverQuarium. And kids of all ages will have fun at the All American Fun Park, which has laser tag, mini golf, go-carts, batting cages, and more.

Golfers should note that Albany has several courses on which to test one's skill. And game bird hunters take note: Albany is known as the Quail Hunting Capital of the World, and there are several historic plantations where you can hunt.

And when you want to get out, there are several state parks in the southwestern Georgia area where you can explore nature and/or history, including Seminole, Kolomoki Mounds, George T. Bagby, Reed Bingham, and Georgia Veterans.

For fun inside and out, consider a move to Albany.
