Albany, New York

Don't let New York City fool you, it's not the capital of the world, it's not even the capital of it's own state – Albany is! With a total population of approximately 95,658, Albany just might be one of the calmest capitals in the world – but it is by no means boring! Situated along the Hudson in northeast New York state, Albany is more than 300 years old, and was only the second American city to be chartered.

Its rich history is reflected in the New York State Capitol. Constructed over 32 years, between 1867 and 1899, it is a marvelous example of 19th century neoclassical architecture. Costing $25 million, it was, at the time, the most expensive governmental building in the world, featuring extravagant "Million Dollar Staircases."

Then there is the city's renowned performing arts center, The Egg. Shaped like an egg, its design is bound to leave as much of a lasting impression on you as the international performances you'll be treated to inside. But make sure to come a bit early, so you can marvel at its impressive collection of modern American paintings and sculptures from the 60s and 70s.

In the summertime, the newly renovated riverfront offers many great attractions, such as the annual Tulip Festival in May or the free summer Alive-at-Five concert series at the Riverfront Park.

Or if you'd just like to sit back and relax, why not take a tour on the Hudson River, end enjoy the natural surroundings. You're also only a short distance south of Adirondack Park, which encompasses one-third of the total land area of New York State, and a short distance north of the Catskill Forest Preserve.

For those with children, Albany has numerous excellent educational institutions such as Albany University, part of the esteemed SUNY network. And being only a short drive away from New York City, Boston, and Montreal, those family road trips are going to be enjoyable for everyone!

So if you'd like to live in New York but get some sleep as well, come to Albany!
