Albert Lea, Minnesota

Albert Lea is located in southern Minnesota, 37 miles (60 kilometers) northwest of Mason City, Iowa, 65 miles (105 kilometers) southwest of Rochester, and 97 miles (156 kilometers) due south of the Twin Cities. It is the seat of Freeborn County, and is home to 18,356 people.

The Freeborn County Museum and Historic Village exhibits a large collection of artifacts, antique machinery, and vehicles. The Village recreates daily life in the pioneer days, complete with train depot, church, school, post office, county jail, barber shop, and a variety of other buildings. For a great outing with your kids, try a visit to Greibrok's Toy Tractor Farm or the Storylady Doll and Toy Museum. In October, you can head to the Pumpkin Patch for fun, games, and delicious hand-picked produce.

The Albert Lea Art Center offers a new exhibit each month, and the Community Theatre mounts five productions a year. More great entertainment can be found during the city's annual festivals, including the Big Island Rendezvous, the Heritage Festival, the Doc Evans Memorial Jazz Festival, the Festival of Bands, and the Freeborn County Fair.

Both the community and nearby Albert Lea Lake were named after early explorer Colonel Albert Miller Lea. The lake provides an excellent site for fishing, boating, biking, and lakeside picnics. You can also cool off at the neighboring water park, or enjoy a relaxing boat cruise aboard the Pelican Breeze. If you're feeling daring, you or your children can sign up for stunt water-skiing lessons from the Bayside Skiers. Myre-Big Island State Park is also located on the shores of Albert Lea Lake, and provides a great place for bird-watching, hiking, canoeing, and camping. To learn more about local animals and habitats, visit the Albert Lea Audubon Society. Looking for more lakeside fun? You'll find two golf clubs, the Albert Lea Country Club and the Green Lea Golf Course, on the shores of nearby Fountain Lake.

Picturesque and welcoming, Albert Lea is a great place for families and outdoor enthusiasts!
