Just outside of Washington, DC, on the banks of the Potomac River lies this quiet city of 128,283 residents. Alexandria, or Belle Haven as it was originally known, began as a shipping-and-distribution center on the Potomac River. In 1669, John Alexander purchased a parcel of land for tobacco storage from Captain Robert Howsing, starting what would eventually become a community bearing his name. As an early location for commerce and trade in America, Alexandria is actually almost 50 years older than the City of Washington and colonial architecture is sprinkled throughout the Old Town and Parker Gray Historic District. Canals, initially used for shipping purposes, contribute an unspoken charm to several different area neighborhoods. Alexandria is somewhat unique from other cities in Virginia in that it is not affiliated with any particular county. Popular with the DC workforce, due to its low crime rate, great schools, and friendly neighborhood atmosphere, Alexandria is a short commute (six miles/ nine kilometers) from Washington proper. And rather than drive, residents can take the metro directly into the city. When it comes to weather, Alexandria has long, comfortable falls and spring temperatures that seem to go on forever, which may explain the collection of hip neighbourhood cafés that are ideal for people who like to get out and about. If you're looking for fine restaurants, Alexandria boasts a number of exceptional establishments including the Majestic Café, La Bergerie, Le Gaulois, and Elysium. For music, a variety of big-name artists regularly perform at the Birchmere. In general, Alexandria is an excellent place to live due to the great transportation, support services, and amenities.
