Allen is a great place to escape the noise of Dallas. Here traffic and sirens are replaced with the pleasant melodies of local concert groups, the cheering at the recreation centers, and the quiet fall of footsteps on park trails.

As one of Allen's 43,554 residents, you can also relax in the tranquility of one of 27 parks, munch on a picnic lunch at one of the many picnic areas available around the city, or meander along Allen's network of paved hike and bike trails. The city has long-term goal for these pathways, hoping to provide citywide access that eventually extends to the entire metro Dallas area.

If you're looking to become more hands-on with nature, head east to Lavon Lake. Camping and swimming areas are plentiful, and hunting and fishing are available for the outdoorsy.

There are also a plethora of recreation facilities and programs to keep you busy. There's the Natatorium, which contains two indoor pools, exercise facilities, and a climbing wall; and the Joe Farmer Recreation Center, which offers racquetball courts, a jogging track, and a hillside amphitheater. On Monday nights the amphitheater comes alive with the music of the Summer Sounds concert series. If that merely whets your musical appetite, there's also the Allen Philharmonic Symphony and the Note-Ably woman's chorus.
