Alliston, Ontario

If you're trying to find a balance between work and play, Alliston is the place to be. One of four small communities that comprise the Municipality of New Tecumseth, which has a combined population of 26,141. Alliston itself has a population of 9,679. The little southern Ontario town is only an hour's drive north of Toronto, making it an easy commute to the urban jungle. Or, if you head north for the same amount of time, you'll end up in Georgian Bay – with 14 kilometers (seven miles) of beach, it's one of Ontario's most popular vacation destinations.

Cyclists will have plenty of reasons to peddle in Alliston – it's home to the headquarters of Cycle Canada, the largest operator of bicycle tours in the country! Cycle Canada gives you plenty of opportunities to ride through town and in the countryside. If you're free on the Victoria Day Weekend, you should join them for the Southern Ontario Century Ride, which stretches between Toronto and Alliston.

When the snow falls, trade in your wheels for a snowmobile and check out the 200 kilometers (124 miles) of trails maintained by the Alliston and District Snowmobile Club. Or, if you just need a break from the "saddle," take some time to check out the local museums – the Base Borden Military Museum showcases military artifacts from the local Air Base, and the South Simcoe Pioneer Museum lets you get to know the people who lived in the area in bygone days. If you prefer mingling with modern day locals, check out the exhibits of local artists at the Millpond Gallery and Center for the Arts.

And when you're looking to get out of town, there's plenty to do just a short drive away. Lay on the beach at Wasaga Beach Provincial Park; go shopping in one of the friendly towns along the coast; or take in an NHL game, a play, or the nightlife of Toronto. Alliston offers the best of Southern Ontario.
