Ames, Iowa

Ames is located in central Iowa, 34 miles (55 kilometers) north of Des Moines. It is part of Story County, and home to 50,731 residents.

To explore the city's past, visit the Ames Historical Society, tour the Iowa State University's 1860 Farm House Museum, or take a ride aboard a vintage 1920s train on the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad.

Iowa State University is the local hub for the visual arts, and features more than 2000 artworks on its campus grounds, as well as an excellent collection of fine and decorative arts in the Brunier Art Museum. The Iowa State Center hosts a variety of events, ranging from hometown sports games to music and performing arts events. For a great night's entertainment, take in a performance by the Central Iowa Symphony, or the ACTORS, Inc. community theater.

Ames is also home to Reiman Gardens, which features beautiful flowerbeds, an indoor conservatory, and numerous butterflies in an indoor exhibit. Another fantastic outdoor destination is the Iowa Arboretum, a 378-acre (153-hectare) "living museum" with hundreds of trees, shrubs, and flowers located in a scenic woodland setting.
