Antigonish, Nova Scotia

Antigonish is a town in Nova Scotia, located 188 kilometers (117 miles) southwest of Sydney and 209 kilometers (130 miles) northeast of Halifax. It is part of Antigonish County, and is home to 4,754 people.

Antigonish was founded in 1784, and its name derives from a Mi'kmaq word that means "the meeting place of five forked rivers." You can learn more about the past at the Antigonish Heritage Museum, which features two exhibit rooms and a collection of genealogical materials. The town is also home to the beautiful Antigonish Golf and Country Club, lovely city parks, and many scenic trails. Many beautiful beaches are found nearby, and each has its own unique character. You can go bird-watching at St. George's Bay, clam digging at Bayfield Beach Provincial Park, visit a lighthouse at Ballantyne's Cove, or scuba diving at Malignant Cove Beach.

The Antigonish Highland Games has been an annual tradition since 1863, and celebrates the town's Scottish roots through athletic competitions, music, dance, and song. Festival Antigonish Summer Theatre offers more than a top-notch hundred performance in two months, while Theatre Antigonish provide quality productions throughout the year. The end of the summer brings the Evolve Music Festival in August and the week-long Eastern Nova Scotia Exhibition in September.
