The Natural State definitely lives up to its name. With more than 9,700 miles (15607 kilometers) of streams, 600,000 acres (242,814 hectares) of lakes, and 17.2 million acres (6.9 million hectares) of forest covering the mountains, plains, and delta land, Arkansas is a nature lover and adventurer's dream. The more than 50 national and state parks make fishing, swimming, hiking, golfing, boating, and hunting popular activities for the outdoor type. But that doesn't mean that a bustling city life is lacking. The state capital, Little Rock – probably most often associated with former president Bill Clinton – for example, is a vibrant place with plenty of arts, music, dining, shopping, history, and architecture on offer. But it's the 2,725,714 people of Arkansas, who are well known for their Southern hospitality and charm, that make all those who visit or relocate to the state feel warmly welcomed. (Added to the welcome package are low taxes, affordable living, and a temperate, four-season climate.) Other than Mr. Clinton, famous Arkansans abound – including household names Maya Angelou, John Grisham, Johnny Cash, and Billy Bob Thornton. And it's true that you can find some real gems in this state – Arkansas has the only diamond mine open to the public, in Crater of Diamonds State Park near Murfreesboro. (Since 1972, "rockhounding" visitors have carried away 22,000 diamonds!) Whether you're scouting for gems or scouting for jobs, this scenic state provides a great mix of down-home hospitality and cosmopolitan flare in one beautiful setting.
