If you're looking for an adventure, Arviat is the place to find it!

Have a "wild" time spotting wildlife. From polar bears to caribou to beluga whales, you'll see them all in or around Nunavut's most southern mainland community. And the McConnell River Bird Sanctuary, located just south of Arviat, is home to a variety of bird species, including sandhill cranes, swans, loons, and snowy owls. And fishermen will love Arviat's plentiful supply of arctic char, cod, and lake trout. For a more intimate animal encounter, be sure to attend the Nunavut Dogteam Derby – you might even try dogsledding yourself!

Beyond Arviat's spectacular fauna, is the fascinating traditional Inuit culture. Participate in caribou cookouts and traditional games; dance to unique Inuit music at events such as the Inuumariit Music Festival; observe the creation of traditional Inuit clothing like sealskin coats and backpacks at the Kiluk Sewing Center; and take in a throat-singing performance, a form of music, usually performed by two women, which can also be described as breathing games or vocal games, and is made up of words and/or meaningless syllables. And those who are particularly adventurous can spend a night (or two) in an igloo! Arviat residents take much pride in their traditional artwork and create remarkable carvings using a local stone called steatite. You can watch the carvers in action at the Ulimaut Carving Shop.
