Auburn, Alabama

The city of Auburn is located in eastern Alabama, seven miles (11 kilometers) southwest of Opelika, 35 miles (56 kilometers) northwest of Columbus, Georgia, and 54 miles (87 kilometers) northeast of Montgomery. It is part of Lee County, and is home to 42,987 people.

The community was founded in 1836, and took its name from a poem by Oliver Goldsmith, which featured the line "Sweet Auburn, the loveliest village of the plain." Auburn University (originally named The East Alabama Male College) was founded in 1856, and has been an integral part of the city ever since. Today, Auburn University is the largest university in Alabama, with an annual enrollment of about 23,000 students. The Auburn Tigers excel in athletics, and treat sports fans to football, basketball, baseball, and a variety of other athletic events throughout the year. To learn more about local sports heroes, visit the Lovelace Athletic Museum or the Tiger Trail. Auburn University is also home to an impressive number of sports facilities, including stadiums, swimming pools, a horseracing track, and an 18-hole championship golf course.

The 1,900-acre (769 hectare) Auburn University campus also contains many historic buildings, including the Auburn University Chapel, Samford Hall, and Langdon Hall. The 1847 Pebble Hill was once the home of Colonel Scott. Today it houses the university's Center for the Arts and Humanities, which offers art, history, and literature programs. Auburn University Theatre mounts five great productions each year, along with summertime dinner theater and special events. The Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art houses an outstanding collection of American and European art, and also offers traveling exhibitions and educational programs. The university is also home to the Agricultural Heritage Park, the Donald E. Davis Arboretum, and the 110-acre (45-hectare) Louise Kreher Forest Ecology Preserver.

Looking for some off-campus attractions? Family Fun Park offers go-carts, mini golf, and other diversions, while the SurfSide Water Park offers fantastic waterslides and pools to help you beat the summer heat. Golfers can tee off at the Moore's Mill Club, or visit the Grand National Golf Course or Saugahatchee Country Club in nearby Opelika. Kiesel Park is a great place for nature hikes, while Lake Harding provides a convenient site for boating and watersports. Chewacla State Park is a wonderful place for a family getaway, and features a 26-acre (11-hectare) lake for fishing, swimming, and boating. The park also contains a beautiful waterfall, nature trails, recreational facilities, and campsites.
