Auckland, New Zealand

Subtropical, multicultural, sophisticated, and fun – Auckland is non-stop paradise.

As New Zealand's largest city (it's home to one-third of the country's population), Auckland has all you need. It boasts some of the world's finest wineries (the most famous ones are found on the beautiful Waiheke Island), a fabulous nightclub district on Karangahape Road, and a rich culinary heritage founded on its mix of Asian and Pacific traditions. Seafood lovers will be in heaven here – two of the most popular local dishes are green-lipped mussels and Clevedon Coast oysters.

Besides restaurants and bars, Auckland also features a large casino, Sky City complex, and a vibrant theater scene, with venues such as the Aotea Theatre, the Bruce Mason Centre, and the The PumpHouse Theatre & Gallery. And, of course, a major facet of life in Auckland is the thriving Maori culture (Maori make up 12% of the population). Visit Awhina, a major shopping center that sells indigenous arts and goods made by local Maori craftspeople. A number of galleries and theaters also showcase their rich musical and dance traditions.

Auckland has long received top ratings for its lifestyle. Of course, its sunny climate and gorgeous natural amenities are a big part of the city's attraction. The city's gem, the Auckland Domain, is a park located within the crater of an extinct volcano. Every year, residents flock there for a spectacular outdoor concert series. With its three harbors, you'll never be far from the beach in Auckland and it's a pleasure getting active with activities such as windsurfing and kayaking. The city is also surrounded by two mountain ranges and a vast network of rainforests, giving residents access to beautiful and challenging hiking trails. The most cherished places, though, are on the Hauraki Gulf islands. Take a ferry to Waiheke Island and enjoy walks through quiet olive groves, bountiful vineyards and green forests.

Owing to its attractiveness, Auckland has drawn many immigrants in recent years, forming a solid cultural mix. In addition to the Maori, 62% of the population is of European descent, 11% comes from the nearby Pacific Islands, and the growing Asian community makes up a further 9%. This multicultural heritage has only added to the city's dynamic feel. And Auckland makes a great home base for those with a travel bug – Australia and Southeast Asia are just a hop, skip, and a jump away. It's just one more thing that makes this city an irresistible place to live.
