Welcome to Georgia's second-largest and oldest city, Augusta, a city of 195,182 located along the Savannah River on the border with South Carolina. Experience the city's history by walking down the tree-lined streets past antebellum mansions. The city also boasts many African American heritage sites. Or stop into one of the many shops and restaurants to taste the Southern fare.

Historically known as the Garden City, Augusta gained this name because many wealthy people were attracted to the city for its comfortable surroundings and longer growing season, so they built large estates with extensive gardens, in area known as the Hill. The city still competes annually for the title of Tree City, for having the largest number of trees per capita. And the locals' love of scenic surroundings can also be seen in the Riverwalk and at the botanical gardens at the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame. (Of course, Augusta is most famous as the home of the Masters Golf Tournament – and even if you're not at the level to compete, there are many area courses to try.)

For those who appreciate the arts, Augusta has its own opera company and symphony, along with plenty of jazz clubs. And for sports fans, there are the Augusta Green Jackets (baseball) and the Augusta Lynx (hockey).

For your weekend entertainment, head out to the mountains or beach, since the city is conveniently located less than three hours away from each. And for trips further away, the Augusta Regional Airport is serviced by three major American airlines.
