Baker Lake, also known by its local name, Qamanit'uaq (which may be translated as "where the river widens," "a huge widening of a river," or "big lake joined by a river at both ends"), is located only about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the geographic center of Canada. Baker Lake is the only Nunavut community not found on the coast, and is located where the Thelon River empties into Baker Lake. The hamlet is accessible by air, with regular flights to other small northern communities, and to larger centers like Winnipeg, Manitoba in the south. The location of the hamlet provides nearby access to the majestic locales of the inland Arctic, including protected Canadian Heritage Areas and parks, including the Thelon Wildlife Sanctuary, the Thelon Heritage River, the Kazan Heritage River, the Fall Caribou Crossing National Historic Site, and the Inuujarvik Territorial Park. Among the features of the area terrain are rivers, pools, waterfalls, and rolling tundra. Baker Lake has a predominantly Inuit population, and they are very proud of their heritage. The 1,507 citizens have invested in an Inuit Heritage Center, or Itsarnittakarvik. The center offers hands-on exhibits, and focuses on the unique inland culture of the Inuit of Baker Lake. In the spring, the people gather to celebrate Hamlet Days with a carnival, dog team races, dances, and other community events. Why not come to Baker Lake and join the celebration?
