Bangor, Maine

Bangor is located in the Penobscot Valley region of the The Maine Highlands, which are located at the center of the state. Bangor is the third-largest city in Maine, and is considered the economic center for central, northern, and eastern Maine. The city is located 77 miles (124 kilometers) northeast of Maine's capital, Augusta, and 235 miles (378 kilometers) northeast of Boston and southeast of Quebec City.

There is plenty to do in and around town. Golfers will enjoy spending days at the Bangor Municipal Golf Course, a 27-hole championship course complete with practice greens, a 15-tee driving range, a pro shop, and restaurant. Prefer shopping? Enjoy spending days off shopping and dining in Bangor's historic downtown. Enjoy the arts? See the latest exhibits at the University of Maine Museum of Art. If it's performing arts you crave, look no further than the Bangor Symphony Orchestra or Penobscot Theatre Company, or see what's playing at the multi-purpose Civic Center Auditorium.

Families can enjoy events like the American Folk Festival in August and the Bangor State Fair in July/August. Or if you want your kids to have fun and learn something at the same time, check out the Bangor Museum and Center for History, the Maine Discovery Museum, and the Page Farm & Home Museum.

Want to get in touch with some great New England nature? Head out to the Bangor City Forest, which encompasses 650 acres (263 hectares), and includes 9.2 miles (15 kilometers) of walking and cross-country skiing trails. Or travel a bit north to Milford to enjoy spending time at Sunkhaze Meadows National Wildlife Refuge. And Bangor is located about 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of Acadia National Park, a 47,000-acre (19,020-hectare) park set along the state's rugged coast, which is a great place for biking, hiking, boating, camping, swimming, skiing, wildlife-watching, and more.

And those who love a good scare probably know that Bangor is the home of Stephen King! In the summer and fall, the CVB offers Tommyknockers & More bus tours, allowing you to see your new hometown "as seen through the books of Stephen King"!
