Barrhead, Alberta

From Aaron the Blue Heron to steer wrestlers, life in Barrhead definitely moves to a different beat. Still, that difference is what gives this Alberta town a community spirit you won't be able to resist.

Located just over 127 kilometers (79 miles) northwest of Edmonton, Barrhead has long been a town that welcomes outsiders. While early settlers were originally attracted to the opportunity of finding gold up in the Yukon, today, people come for the excellent job opportunities in the forestry, agricultural, and oil-and-gas industries. When they arrive, they'll be greeted by the community's mascot, Aaron the Blue Heron. With the area's rich natural resources, including lakes, rivers, streams, and ponds, the stunning bird is a common sight around town. In fact, residents celebrate the famous bird every August with the Blue Heron Fair Days. The event features agricultural displays and contests, including a rodeo. The town's biggest rodeo event, however, takes place in September, when hundreds of people descend on the town for the Wildrose Rodeo Association's competition. Barrel racers, steer riders, and calf ropers are just a few of the Western types to take over the town during the competition.

For more conventional recreation, take a trip to the Vega Sand Hills, a stunning sand-dune formation with trails perfect for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. You'll also find tranquil camping and fishing grounds at Peanut Lake and Thunder Lake Provincial Park. Of course, the area does get a fair dose of winter, allowing you to enjoy a wide array of winter activities. At Misty Ridge Ski Club, for example, you'll find both downhill skiing and snowboarding.

For community services, Barrhead is top notch. With a full-sized arena and skating, skateboarding, swimming, tennis, boxing, judo, and dance facilities, youth will never be bored. They've also got access to an education system that includes a French immersion program spanning kindergarten to grade nine.

Barrhead is a bustling town full of opportunity and community spirit. Why not become a part of it?
