There's no shortage of history and culture in Battle Creek. Sojourner Truth, arguably the most noted African-American woman of the 19th century, lived in Battle Creek for more than 20 years. Truth escaped from slavery in 1826, and became an itinerant preacher, fighting injustice. Unveiled in 1999, The Sojourner Truth Monument stands to commemorate her life and work as a human rights pioneer, and her commitment to Battle Creek.

More fun awaits you a short drive outside of Battle Creek. In Hickory Corners, 16 miles (25.7 kilometers) northwest of Battle Creek, you'll find the Gilmore Car Museum. For car enthusiasts, the charm of the GCM is immeasurable. On its 90 acres (36 hectares) of landscaped grounds, you'll find 200 restored vehicles representing more than 100 years of automotive history. And, if aviation is more your cup of tea, The Air Zoo in Kalamazoo, located 26 miles (41.8 kilometers) west of Battle Creek, will not disappoint.

For evenings out, The Brass Band of Battle Creek is world-renowned for its hybrid of traditional British brass band styling and modern American musical elements. The 31-one member band routinely sells out shows in Battle Creek. Tonight Show legend, Doc Severinsen, has twice guest-appeared as part of the ensemble.

Finally, golf lovers will never be at a loss, as Southern Michigan offers numerous world-class courses, of which 11 are in the Battle Creek/Kalamazoo area. For example, Binder Park, a challenging 27-hole golf course, located in the southeast corner of Battle Creek, is known as one of the most extraordinary public golf courses in Southern Michigan, and was rated by USA Today as being "The Best Value in Michigan."
