Beaumont is located in southeastern Texas, 24 miles (39 kilometers) north of Port Arthur and 86 miles (138 kilometers) northeast of Houston. It is the county seat of Jefferson County, and home to 113,866 people. Beaumont's proximity to the Louisiana border adds a strong Cajun influence to its Texan culture, and the combination of these two backgrounds gives the city a distinctive flare. Beaumont is nicknamed the "Museum Capital of Texas," and it's not hard to see why. History buffs can learn about conflicts ranging from the 1836 Battle of San Jacinto to the Persian Gulf War at the Clifton Steamboat Museum, or view the city's oldest surviving house at the John Jay French Museum. In 1901, oil was discovered when a gusher blew at Spindletop, causing Beaumont to become an instant boomtown. This chapter of the city's heritage is preserved by the Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum, and the Texas Energy Museum. Other local museums include the Fire Museum of Texas, the Beaumont Police Department Museum, and the Edison Museum. Another museum devoted to the achievements of a single person is the Babe Didrikson Zaharias Museum. Former Beaumont resident Mildred (Babe) Didrikson Zacharias was both an Olympic track and field champion and a professional golfer. She was the Tiger Woods of her time, won every major golf championship, and was voted the "greatest woman athlete of the first half of the 20th century" by the Associated Press. As one of eastern Texas' major cultural centers, Beaumont also offers a number of fine and performing art venues. On the visual arts scene, there's the Art Museum of Southeast Texas, the Beaumont Art League, and the Art Studio. For the best in local performing arts, check out the Symphony of Southeast Texas, the Beaumont Ballet Theatre, or the Beaumont Community Players. The city's main performance venues include the Jefferson Theatre, the Julie Rogers Theatre, and the Lamar University Theatre. For a breath of fresh air, head to Riverfront Park for a scenic view of the Neches River, or admire beautiful gardens and rare plants at the Beaumont Botanical Gardens. Tyrell Park is a popular multi-use site, and features a golf course, formal garden, and a wetland area with phenomenal bird-watching opportunities. Other nearby natural areas include Village Creek State Park and Big Thicket National Preserve, which is home to more than a thousand plant species and nearly 300 types of birds. With its diverse historic, cultural, and natural attractions, Beaumont is sure to satisfy everyone! See our 4 Jobs in Beaumont, Texas Websites for this CityGovernment:
