Beaver Creek, Yukon Territory

Live life on the edge in Beaver Creek, Canada's most westerly city, located just 10 kilometers (six miles) from the Alaskan border. This tight-knit community of 88 people has a swimming pool for summer recreation and a skating and curling rink for fun winter sports.

Celebrated as the point where north met south during the construction of the Alcan Highway, this remote community enjoys a cornucopia of natural wonders. On the Canadian side, there's the majestic Kluane National Park, which is home to the 5,959-meter (19,550-foot) high Mount Logan, Canada's highest point. Stop by the Kluane Museum of Natural history to brush up on your knowledge of the many plant and animal species that make their home in the park.

Stateside you can visit Kluane's American sister, the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. Called the mountain kingdom of North America, it contains the largest collection of peaks over 4,876 meters (16,000 feet). While you're here, you can investigate Chisana and see how this gold rush town boomed and then vanished within a few short years.

A wonderland of unspoiled wilderness, Beaver Creek is an excellent spot to set up a home base on your northern adventure.
