Bedford is a town located in eastern Massachusetts, just 16 miles (26 kilometers) northwest of Boston. It is part of Middlesex County, and has a population of 12,596. This historic community first developed around an Indian trading post in 1640, and was officially incorporated in 1729. Bedford is proud to be the "home of the oldest complete flag in the United States." The Bedford Flag is a colonial militia flag, and was reputedly carried by Nathaniel Page (the Bedford Minuteman) on April 19, 1775, at the start of the American Revolution. You can see the famous flag for yourself at the Bedford Free Public Library, and relive this chapter of history during one of the performances by the Bedford Minuteman Company. The Bedford Historical Society offers more information on the town's past, along with tours of Job Lane House and other historic sites. The Friends of Bedford Depot Park is dedicated to preserving the region's railroad history, and has artifacts, photos, and an authentic rail car on display. Parts of the old Billerica and Bedford Railroad have been converted to recreational trails, and three trails converge at the Bedford Depot Park. The Minuteman Bikeway is the most popular trail, and connects Bedford to Lexington, Arlington, and West Cambridge. You can also take the Narrow-Gauge Rail-Trail to Billerica or head down the Reformatory Branch Rail-Trail to Concord. The end of the trail will bring you alongside the Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, a 3,600-acre (1,457-hectare) wilderness area that's home to a variety of birds and animals.
