Bel Air, Maryland

LA residents may be surprised to learn that there's another Bel Air in northern Maryland. The town of Bel Air is located 23 miles (37 kilometers) northeast of Baltimore. It is the seat of Harford County, and has a population of 10,080.

Bel Air is home to a number of heritage sites, including the 1788 Hays House Museum, the 1847 Tudor Hall, the 1898 Liriodendron Mansion, and the 1921 Rockfield Manor. To learn more about the past, check the Historical Society of Harford County website for exhibits, lectures, and other special events.

Harford Community College is a center of local culture, and offers many performances and exhibitions by students, faculty, and touring artists. Music lovers can enjoy great performances by the Susquehanna Symphony Orchestra, the Harford Choral Society, and during the "Concerts in the Park" series presented by the Harford County Cultural Arts Board. During summer evenings, Shamrock Park offers free outdoor movies for the whole family to enjoy.

For a breath of fresh air, head to Rockfield Park. Here you'll find eight themed horticultural gardens, including the grove for the senses, the gazebo garden, and the butterfly and humming bird garden. Nearby Rocks State Park features deep forests and massive boulders, and is an excellent place for hiking and rock climbing. Deer Creek runs through the park, and can be used for canoeing, kayaking, tubing, and fishing. Susquehanna State Park is located 12 miles (19 kilometers) northeast of Bel Air, and is a great place for boating, fishing, camping, hiking, and wildlife-viewing. The park is also home to the Rock Run Historic Area, which features a 200-year-old grist mill, a mansion, toll house, and the remnants of a canal. Bel Air's proximity to Chesapeake Bay and the Susquehanna River makes it a great home for water enthusiasts – sailing, jet-skiing, and powerboating are just a few of the activities you can enjoy.

See for yourself why Bel Air is the "heart of Harford County!"
