Nestled along the picturesque shores of central British Columbia's Discovery Coast is the quaint fishing town of Bella Bella (also known as Waglisla). With a population of 1,253, it is the largest community in the area and enjoys year-round BC Ferry service and daily air service. The islands around Bella Bella – with their pocket beaches, rocky headlands, and sand dunes – remain largely unexplored and are home to an abundance of wildlife including orcas, porpoises, and sea lions. Those adventurous enough to cross the eight kilometers (five miles) of open ocean to the westernmost Goose Island will be rewarded with the opportunity to enjoy a unique white-sand beach – made of powdered clamshells, the sand squeaks like a gym floor when walked upon. Kayaking enthusiasts can paddle through the waters surrounding Bella Bella, and the varied ecology of the coast and plethora of shipwrecks will please even the most experienced scuba divers. If you want to learn more about the Heiltsuk people of Bella Bella, head to the interpretive center, which is aimed at educating visitors about their history. And also be sure to check out the salmon barbecue, which is a real treat! For awe-inspiring surroundings and warm, welcoming people, check out the adventures in the coastal town of Bella Bella.
