Belmont, Massachusetts

Belmont, Massachusetts, is a residential suburb of Boston, located seven miles (11 kilometers) west of Boston, and five miles (eight kilometers) west of Cambridge. Once an agricultural community, Belmont is now mostly residential, and prides itself on being "The Town of Homes."

Local attractions include the Belmont Gallery of Art, and several beautiful reservation areas. Beaver Brook Reservation is the first reservation area established by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation. This 59-acre (24-hectare) site includes woodlands, wetlands, open fields, and a cascading waterfall. Popular activities include hiking, biking, baseball, cross-country skiing, fishing, and picnicking. The reservation also features historical structures, natural history programs, and a spray pool to help small children escape the summer heat.

Another popular summertime destination is Fresh Pond, a reservoir and park located in Cambridge. Designed by the famous Olmsted Brothers landscape firm, the park includes a 155-acre (63-hectare) lake, and 162 acres (66 hectares) of surrounding land. The ice from Fresh Pond was once harvested by "Ice King" Frederic Tudor, and shipped across the world. The business was so successful that in 1843, Tudor built a railroad to connect his wharves in Charlestown to Fresh Pond. Local residents in Waltham clamored for the railway line to be extended to their village, and so the railway line was connected to Waltham and also present-day Belmont. In 1852, the pond became the source of Cambridge's drinking water. Today, this green oasis features a golf course, and is a favorite site for walking, running, biking, roller-blading, and bird-watching.

Always remember, Belmont is only 11 minutes away from the world-renowned universities and vibrant arts scene of Cambridge, and 18 minutes away from the museums, shops, and cultural attractions of Boston. A warm and inviting community in the suburbs of Boston and Cambridge, Belmont is a great place to call home!
