Berkeley, California, lies south of the city of Oakland on the shore of San Francisco Bay, in the San Francisco-Oakland metropolitan area.

The city was named after the Irish idealist philosopher and bishop, George Berkeley, and its roots date back to the middle of the 19th century. The city is best known as the home of the University of California Berkeley, and in recent years has also garnered a reputation as a center for gourmet food!

The presence of the university has helped to foster Berkeley's reputation for diversity and for being home to a vibrant cultural scene. In fact, at just about any time of the year, city residents have the option of taking in a play at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre, listening to a concert performed by the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra, or seeing one of the productions of Berkeley Opera.

Berkeley also has a number of green spaces to get out and enjoy the coastal climate, such as the Berkeley Rose Garden and the university's renowned botanical gardens. Also nearby is Tilden Nature Area, a 740-acre (299-hectare) nature preserve with a number of hiking and biking trails.

And with the Pacific Coast in one direction and California's Napa Valley wine region in another, Berkeley is also the perfect starting point to explore the region.
