Beverly, Massachusetts

Beverly, Massachusetts, is on the Danvers River and the Atlantic coast. The city is three miles (five kilometers) north of Salem, 18 miles (29 kilometers) northeast of Boston, and 21 miles (34 kilometers) northwest of Cambridge. Beverly has a population of 39,862, and is part of Essex County.

The community was Washington's naval base from 1775–1776 and played an important role in the American Revolutionary War. The first ship commissioned by the US Navy sailed from its ports, making Beverly the "Birthplace of the United States Navy." The coastal landscape has also inspired many artists over the years, and a painting of West Beach by Fitz Hugh Lane sold for $3.5 million. Beverly was also known as the "Garden City and Summer Capitol of the United States," since many of Boston's elite families built summer homes in the area. President Taft leased a summer cottage here from 1909–1910 and signed the "Treaty of Beverly" here. Today a rose garden blooms where the cottage once stood, and is part of Lynch Park.

Long Hill is the old Federal-style summer home of Ellery Sedgwick, former editor of The Atlantic Monthly. The beautiful Sedgwick gardens are another major attraction. More than 100 acres (40 hectares) of woodlands surround the property, and can be used for hiking, hunting, and more. In the winter, its trails can be used for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The Beverly Historical Society and Museum maintains Hale Farm, Balch House, and Cabot House, which contains the museum's collections and a research library.

Beverly Main Streets is a vibrant commercial and entertainment hub, and frequently hosts family shows, concerts, and community events. Don't miss the week-long Beverly Homecoming, which features a Lobster Festival, scrabble competitions, a volleyball tournament, and other activities.

Want to frolic in the Atlantic surf? Then head to the Brackenbury, Dane Street, Rice's, or Pleasantview beaches for boating, swimming, and long walks along the shore. If you want to head deeper into the waters, charter boats are available for fishing trips and sightseeing tours. The Hospital Point Light at Salem Harbor is more than a century old, and can be seen from Salem Willows Park. Beverly is also home to golf course, tennis club, and more city parks. Looking to get fit or find a new hobby? The Recreation Department offers sports, recreation, and art programs for all ages.
