Billings is a city of 89,847, located in a dramatic setting in south central Montana. The community is set along the Yellowstone River, and is bounded on the north and east by 400-foot (122-meter) sandstone cliffs known as the Rimrocks. These provide great opportunities for exploring, as well as excellent views of the city and area mountains, including the Bighorn, Crazy, Pryor, Snowy, and Beartooth ranges. Billings is only about a four-hour drive northeast of Yellowstone National Park and about a five-and-a-half-hour drive northeast of Grand Teton National Park. And outdoor enthusiasts can also stay closer to home, enjoying locations like the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Area, Gallatin National Forest, or Custer National Forest, and their opportunities for camping, hiking, wildlife-watching, and more. In the winter, enjoy skiing at locations like Red Lodge Mountain Resort, about 60 miles (96 kilometers) southwest of Billings. Though Native peoples had lived in the area for thousands of years (you can see some archeological traces in Pictograph Cave State Park), the city itself is relatively new, founded in the late 1800s, and named for Northern Pacific Railroad President Frederick Billings. Another railway connection is that Billings' nickname, The Magic City, came from the explosive growth it experienced following the arrival of the railroad. Today, in addition to transportation, Billings' main economic bases are agriculture, energy, and tourism. The city is a hub for the surrounding district. As a result, there is plenty to keep you occupied in town. You can spend time shopping, checking out exhibits at the Yellowstone Art Museum, taking in a show at Venture Theatre, seeing a performance of the Billings Symphony Orchestra & Chorale, or attending games of one of the local teams, including Billings Bulls hockey games, Billings Mustangs baseball games, and Billings Outlaws football games. Don't forget to take the kids to ZooMontana. Golfers need not worry – there are several golf courses in Billings. Billings' climate is generally sunny and dry, with average January temperatures being around 28F (-2 C) and average July temperatures being around 85.8F (30 C). Those who love winter will really appreciate the average annual snowfall – 57.2 inches (145 cm)! It's more than just the scenery that makes Billings an attractive community to consider for your next move. See our 37 Jobs in Billings, Montana Websites for this CityGovernment:
