Black Mountain, North Carolina

The town of Black Mountain is located in Buncombe County, North Carolina, and lies approximately 16 miles (26 kilometers) east of Asheville and 114 miles (183 kilometers) northwest of Charlotte.

Black Mountain offers residents an historic downtown district with quaint shops and restaurants, an arts festival, an abundance of recreational activities, and a spectacular natural setting.

Every year, Black Mountain hosts the Lake Eden Arts Festival, which includes concerts, dancing, folk art displays, and poetry readings. Its mission is to "cultivate a deeper understanding and appreciation of cultural traditions and the arts in Western North Carolina and beyond." Throughout the rest of the year, arts aficionados can take advantage of the Black Mountain Center for the Arts, which has a theater and a gallery, and offers arts classes and workshops.

For hiking trails, beautiful vistas, and a scenic waterfall, head to Chimney Rock Park, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of town. The park's centerpiece is the Chimney, a 315-foot (96-meter) rock monolith topped with an observation deck from which you take in spectacular views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Residents of Black Mountain can also take advantage of the nearby Blue Ridge Parkway, a scenic drive running through the southern Appalachians of North Carolina and Virginia, and whose headquarters is in Asheville. And if the slopes call you in the winter, you'll be pleased to hear that in Black Mountain, you're just a short drive from several ski areas.

Closer to home, Lake Tomahawk Park includes picnic areas, a community garden, tennis courts, and a walking path that circles the lake – the perfect place for afternoon fun or evening stroll under the stars!
