Blair, Nebraska

Located just a half hour north of Nebraska's largest city, Omaha, Blair is a town where community ties continue to define daily life.

For a town of just 7,512 people, Blair is surprisingly busy and prosperous. Its new YMCA facility is an important community hub, where families can gather to stay active and get involved in community programs. As well, its three major employers – Cargill, Omaha Public Power District, and Huntel Systems – have kept important jobs in the community and helped the area to thrive economically. Blair has an abundance of heritage attractions and natural getaways. One of the key sites is Fort Atkinson, an old military installation that saw many battles during American's western settlement drive in the 19th century. With a renovated soldiers' barracks, an old armorer's shop, and a restored Council House, the fort is a delightful trip back in time. In terms of outdoor activities, enthusiasts will love fishing for large mouth bass, bluegill, and northern pike on the Missouri River. For a more serene getaway, check out DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge. This protected area is rich in waterfowl, such as warblers, shorebirds, and raptors. The most spectacular sights occur in fall when flocks of ducks and geese fly overhead. Besides wildlife, you'll also find beautiful hiking trails and swimming and boating along DeSoto Lake.

In terms of practical daily living, Blair has an outstanding education system. The teacher-student ratio in most area schools generally hovers at 15:1. The town is also fortunate to house a superb college, Dana College. Offering Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in almost 40 fields, the college makes it much easier for youth to find opportunities to stay in the town.
