Bremerton, Washington, is located on the Kitsap Peninsula, just 18 miles (29 kilometers) west of Seattle. It is part of Kitsap County, and home to 37,259 people. Bremerton is rich in naval history, and home to the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. This historic shipyard was first established in 1891, played an important role in ship repair during World Wars I and II, and continues to operate today. A major attraction is the Naval Memorial Museum of the Pacific, more commonly known as the Bremerton Naval Museum. Local performing arts groups include the Bremerton Symphony, the Kitsap Opera, and the Peninsula Dance Theatre. The Admiral Theatre and the Bremerton Community Theatre offer great plays for adults, while the Evergreen Children's Theatre and Aurora Valentinetti Puppet Museum offers five plays a year for children and an outstanding collection of puppets. Special events include weekly art walks in the downtown and in the Charleston districts, along with concert series on the boardwalk and in the park. Recreational opportunities abound for Bremerton residents! Boating and watersport enthusiasts have easy access to Evergreen Waterfront Park, Seattle Harbor, and other destinations in the Pudget Sound Area. Golfers can enjoy two 18-hole championship courses at the Gold Mountain Golf Club, while sports enthusiasts will find great facilities in the city's many beautiful parks. To get in touch with nature, visit the Scenic Beach, Illahee, or Kitsap Memorial State Parks for watersports, wildlife viewing, and fantastic outdoor recreation.
