Located along the St. Lawrence Seaway and surrounded by the splendor of the southeastern Ontario landscape, it is no wonder Brockville is called "one of the prettiest cities in Ontario." This city of 21,375 was the first to be incorporated in Upper Canada, and its important past is reflected in the gorgeous historic downtown district and surrounding landmarks. If you want to learn about the history of Brockville, the first place to go is the Brockville Museum. Next, check out Fulford Place, an Edwardian mansion built by Senator George Taylor Fulford, who made his money selling pharmaceuticals manufactured in Brockville. Fort Wellington is a must-see for military buffs – though it was never attacked, back in 1812, it was an important defense post. But the most cherished antique in the city has to be Canada's oldest railway tunnel, which dates back to 1860. Brockville also celebrates its history in other ways. The Brockville Ghost walk provides spooky entertainment. The Celtic Festival, in June, brings together food, music, games, and crafts to celebrate the city's Celtic heritage. And the Harvest Days presentation takes the entire growing season to prepare, as the wheat used in it is planted and harvested in the traditional way – it's even threshed with antique machines! Besides the area's historical sites and activities, the area's biggest attraction is the famous Thousand Islands, which are located just to the south and west of the city. Boats leave Brockville's waterfront to cruise through the majestic channels. Ship captains provide an entertaining account of the stories and legends that surround these beautiful islands. And the area's clear water, along with its many shipwrecks, makes diving here a very popular activity. The pride of the St. Lawrence, this gorgeous, historical city is a fantastic place to live.
