Browns Mills, New Jersey

A rich history and a strong sense of community define this small New Jersey town east of Philadelphia. With its dense pine forests, colorful cranberry and blueberry growing areas, and heritage buildings, Browns Mills is a scenic delight.

Browns Mills is home to Whitesbog Village, which has made major innovations in cranberry and blueberry cultivation that have put the town on the map. Back in the 19th century, few people saw any use for the local swamp areas and the cranberries growing there. But a local bog owner saw an opportunity – he began harvesting the fruit and eventually developed the area's vibrant cranberry industry. And in the early 20th century, the farm's new owner helped develop the land for blueberry fields. Today, the historic village welcomes visitors to hike its beautiful trails, enjoy its tasty blueberry festival, and tour the well-preserved buildings that housed its laborers and stored its harvest. Whitesbog is a perfect way to spend a relaxing afternoon.

Browns Mills is actually part of the larger Township of Pemberton, and the 1,210 residents of Pemberton have a long tradition of coming together to better the community. A few years back, money was collected to create Imagination Kingdom, an interactive park for kids. The community has also worked hard to preserve the local railway station. Dating back to 1892, the historic building no longer serves trains but is now home to a museum and a town information center.

For more immaculate heritage buildings, head to the nearby town of Mount Holly, which is home to a beautiful old courthouse that dates back to 1796. There is also an Episcopal church that was built in 1765 and a Quaker meeting house from 1775 that once served as the meeting place of the state's legislature.

The richness and turmoil of the Colonial area are very much evident in Browns Mills and the surrounding area. For those who appreciate history and beauty, Burlington County is the place to be.
