Brownsville, Texas

Brownsville, Texas, is set just across the border from Matamoros, Mexico, along the Gulf Mexico. It has long embraced its Latin side, and every year, local residents gather with their Mexican counterparts to celebrate the area's Latin heritage. The event is called Charro Days Fiesta, a festival featuring street dances, costume parties, cook-offs, and parades. The city also hosts a major Latin jazz festival each fall. For Mexican culture, on the other hand, the best place to experience it is at the source. With Matamoros just a quick drive across the border, you're only minutes away from authentic Mexican jewelry, leather, handcrafts, and pottery goods. And you won't be able to resist the fabulous festivals in Matamoros. With the Diez y seiz de septiembre independence festivities, the Day of the Dead, and the Battle of Puebla celebrations, you'll never have trouble finding an excuse to party.

Being the site of important battles from America's early wars, Brownsville is a town that takes its history seriously. It is home to several beautiful historic sites, including the Palo Alto Battlefield National Historic Site, which commemorates the major conflicts of the Mexican American War, and Palmito Hill, site of the last battle of the Civil War. For history of a lighter note, Brownsville is also home to the Little Graceland Museum, a tribute to the music and life of Elvis Presley!

In addition to history, Brownsville also has superb natural attractions. To cool off, enjoy the waters and breezes of Boca Chica and Laguna Madre Beaches on the Gulf of Mexico. You can also try your hand at snorkeling and diving – and even bunging jumping and parasailing – at the Queen Isabella Causeway, a scenic barrier reef island.

And there's more! Brownsville has been recognized for its positive community life. Recently, it received an All America Award for its successes in motivating the community to reduce crime, improve literacy, and help more youth to graduate from college.

Brownsville … all this, great shopping, and quality education (at the University of Texas) … what a great place to live!
