Burlington, Vermont

Its population may number only 38,889, but Burlington's vibrant community, fine universities and colleges, rich arts scene, and progressive social atmosphere put it at the top of American cities for quality of life.

Located on the shores of Lake Champlain, beauty and sophistication are the hallmarks of Burlington. You can sail on the area's clear waters, hike through the outlying wooded areas, or ski in the many resorts that dot the hilly and mountainous terrain. Of course, all that adventure in the outdoors means you have to treat yourself and Burlington has plenty of places to indulge! Lake Champlain Chocolates offers its finest Vermont specialties, while Ben & Jerry's ice cream products are an international phenomenon. You can take a tour of the Ben & Jerry's factory to see how the ice cream is made; at the end of the tour, the best part – the sampling and buying – begins.

The city of Burlington and the state of Vermont themselves have a solid record on social issues. In 2000, Vermont became the first US state to legalize civil unions for gay couples. Burlington has long been a gay-friendly city – it boasts a community center for gays and lesbians and several bars and clubs. Of course, the progressive culture of Burlington is helped in no small part by the dynamism of the students who make up such a big part of the community. With top-quality schools – including Saint Michael's College, the University of Vermont, Champlain College, and Burlington College – the city has a youthful vibe and a spirited arts scene. A variety of arts events take place throughout the year, headed by the Discover Jazz Festival, the Lake Champlain Bluegrass Festival, and the Burlington Latino Festival.

To top it all off, Burlington's downtown area is a delight. With a bustling pedestrian mall, the Church Street Marketplace, you'll find plenty to do both day and night. It's no wonder Burlington keeps winning award after award for its quality of life. Life here is good!
