Although a small town of just 1,942 people, Burns Lake is a town of opportunity. With first-class educational facilities, good jobs in the forestry sector, and a progressive approach to community development, this quiet village located between Prince George (226 km, or 142 miles to the east) and Prince Rupert (498 km, or 312 miles to the west) in British Columbia's northwest, is an excellent place to live. It's no surprise that this village, surrounded by forests, has the forestry industry as a major employer. Burns Lake has two large processing facilities, as well as a number of family-owned enterprises. The village has also trail-blazed its own innovative approach to developing the forestry industry: In 1998, it created Burns Lake Community Forest Limited, a cooperative venture operated by the community in partnership with local organizations, including the neighboring First Nations' band. The goal is to manage the forest in a sustainable way that maximizes benefits to the community by hiring local people, protecting the land for recreation and educational activities, and sharing the resources with local First Nations' communities. As one of the first community forest projects in British Columbia, it is an important source of pride for local residents. Besides forestry jobs, there's plenty to attract people to Burns Lake. First, Burns Lake, known as The Heart of the Lakes District, is an outdoor recreation paradise. With François and Babine Lakes nearby along with British Columbia's largest provincial park, North Tweedsmuir Provincial Park a short distance south, you'll enjoy peaceful canoeing and kayaking as well as some of the best hiking and wildlife watching anywhere. Burns Lake itself has worked hard to develop its recreational facilities. With high quality curling, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, golf, and skateboarding facilities, you'll have no problem keeping busy and active. And the community also is the site of a local campus of the College of New Caledonia provides quality education to the area's youth. Of course, the best things about the area is the feeling of freedom and abundance the fresh air and wide open spaces provide: a wonderful experience that no one should miss.
