Cambridge Bay, Nunavut

Cambridge Bay is located on the southern coast of Victoria Island in Canada's newest territory, Nunavut. As the center of the Kitikmeot Region, Cambridge Bay is home to a number of business and government services. The community was originally named in 1839, by the Hudson's Bay Company, after Adolphus Frederick, the Duke of Cambridge. It is now also known as Iqaluktuuttiaq in the native tongue, Inukitut (approximately 75% of the community's population of 1,309 are Inuit). The name, Iqaluktuuttiaq, which means "place with plenty of fish," reflects the abundance of Arctic char and trout found in the area's lakes and rivers. And the large, open coastal plains make animal sightings common in the Kitikmeot Region. Some animals found in the area include caribou, musk ox, fox, polar bears, lemmings and wolves.

Cambridge Bay is located on the tundra, north of the treeline. In warm weather, tiny flowers decorate the landscape. Moraines and Inukshuks (large slabs of rock place in a formation to look like a person) are also characteristic of the area.

Its far north location also means that in the summer, the area experiences nearly 24 hours of daylight, and in the winter, nearly 24 hours of darkness in the winter. While conditions vary from year to year, Cambridge Bay generally experiences moderate summer temperatures (8C/46F in July) and cold winters (-33C/-27F in January).

Recreational facilities in the community include a hockey rink, baseball diamond, curling rink, and swimming pool. Several restaurants, bars, and hotels provide accommodations for visitors. Regular air service provided by FirstAir arrives from small northern communities, as well as larger centers of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories and Edmonton, Alberta.
