Located approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of London, Cambridge is probably best known for its university. With alumnae including such notable personalities as Charles Darwin, Lord Byron, Sir Isaac Newton, and the Prince of Wales, the intellectual reputation of the university has been globally recognized for centuries. For non-university residents, Cambridge also provides a beautiful historic setting nestled in the English countryside. Forest, agricultural land, and mystic, marshy fens surround the city providing easy access to both urban and rural pursuits. Segmented by the river Cam, Cambridge was settled in the first century as a point for river crossing. In the 13th century, dissident scholars (from Oxford) immigrated to the area, eventually forming what is now known as the University of Cambridge. The creation of today's 31 colleges began with Clare College (1326), followed by Pembroke College (1347), Gonville & Caius College (1348), Trinity Hall (1350), and Corpus Christi College (1352). Many of the school's original buildings still exist today. With the growth of Cambridge's academic institutions, numerous bookshops have become a major part of the city's cultural identity. Grand historic buildings, museums, galleries, theatres, pubs, and restaurants also contribute a distinct character to the area. In recent times, the university's presence has helped to develop a significant hi-tech industry, causing many to refer to Cambridge as the British Silicon Valley. In the springtime, Cambridge comes alive with crocuses, daffodils and various May balls (formals) on the banks of the river Cam. In the summer, punting (boating) is a popular pastime, with residents and visitors alike travelling the college backs and upstream to locations such as Grantchester for picnics in the meadows. Numerous festivals also make summer in Cambridge a wonderful time of the year. See our 0 Jobs in Cambridge, England Websites for this CityGovernment:
