Camp Verde is a town in central Arizona, situated 16 miles (26 kilometers) southeast of Cottonwood, 42 miles (68 kilometers) east of Prescott, and 91 miles (146 kilometers) north of Phoenix. It is part of Yavapai County, and is home to 9,451 residents. Camp Verde is in the Verde River Valley, an area once inhabited by the Sinagua Indians. Conflicts arose after settlers moved into the area, and the Arizona Volunteers established a tent camp in 1865 to protect farmers from area tribes. Fort Verde State Park is a military fort that dates from the Indian Wars period, and immerses visitors in the past with living history programs and three historic house museums. The Montezuma Castle is a thousand-year-old Sinagua cliff dwelling, and is effectively a 20-room high-rise apartment nestled in a limestone cliff. Other attractions in this national monument include pueblo ruins, a thousand-year-old irrigation ditch that's still in use, and Montezuma Well, which contains some animal species found nowhere else on earth. The tradition of innovative housing continues to this day, and Arcosanti is a prime example. This eco-friendly architectural project aims to provide housing for 5,000 people and test out alternatives to urban sprawl. Other unique attractions include the Pieh Tool Company, which offers metalworking classes for adults and teens. Out of Africa brings the creatures of the Serengeti to Arizona, including giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and lions. Try your luck at the Cliff Castle Casino, which was voted the #1 Arizona casino for eight years in a row (2000–2007). In addition to card tables, slot machines, and live entertainment, this casino also offers amenities like a gourmet steak house, a bowling center, and Kids Quest play area. The Verde Valley Concert Association proves that the arts can flourish in the high desert, and offers six concerts each season. The Coconino National Forest is an excellent place for fishing and hiking, while the Tonto National Forest offers three million acres (one million hectares) of rugged natural beauty. Want to save wear and tear on your hiking boots? The Verde Canyon Railroad will take you past towering rock pinnacles, Indian ruins, and beautiful flora and fauna, and has been described as Arizona's "longest-running nature show."
