Although a small city of 330,700, Canberra's status as Australia's capital means this sophisticated city has national museums, good quality jobs, two universities, and key institutions, such as government ministries, embassies, and high commissions. Populated by large numbers of students and professionals, Canberra boasts a cosmopolitan ambience with streets lined with cafés, restaurants, and fine stores. While Australian cuisine is more traditionally known for foods such as salt beef and tea billies, today, Canberra's restaurants are more likely to serve what is known as Pacific fusion cuisine, a mix of Mediterranean cooking styles and Australia's bountiful and unique fresh vegetables and meats. Of course, Australia is known for its wines and Canberra lies at the heart of one of the country's main wine-making regions, a fact that will regularly tempt you to taste some of the area's best (and inexpensive) vintages. Canberra isn't just about fine food and drink, though. It is also home to spectacular places and events. Every September, for example, the city blossoms during Floriade, its festival of spring. During the event, the Floriade Village becomes a delight of sights, sounds, and flavors, as a giant flower exhibit and food and entertainment venue open up. Besides the festival, Canberra features a number of major museums, including the National Dinosaur Musuem, the Canberra Bicycle Museum, and the National Zoo & Aquarium. Another kid-friendly spot is the Corin Forest, an outdoor park where kids can try out bobsledding and tobogganing, two rare sports in Australia. Of course, Australia is most famous for its nature and wildlife. In the city itself, you'll spot birds such as grey gulahs, white sulphur-crested cockatoos, and parrots. If you're lucky, you might see a kangaroo, but you're more likely to come across one in the bushlands outside the city. To experience Australia's nature in all its glory, head to the Brindabella Ranges, a spectacular mountain area that is home to a large park area, Namadgi National Park. There, you can enjoy bushwalks and horseback rides through the wilderness. For an excellent quality of life, Canberra is the place to be. It has class, beauty, and incredible opportunity.
