Canmore, Alberta

Canmore, Alberta, is set in the Bow Valley, just 25 kilometers (16 miles) east of Banff (and so just east of Banff National Park) and 105 kilometers (65 miles) west of Calgary.

In addition to Banff, Canmore residents are never at a loss for outdoor activities to enjoy and sites to explore. The town is just north of Peter Lougheed Provincial Park and Elbow-Sheep Wildland Provincial Park. And to the west, on the BC side of the border, are Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park, Kootenay National Park, and Yoho National Park.

Ski enthusiasts will be right at home in Canmore. The Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park, the site of Nordic events from the 1988 Olympics, has more than 60 kilometres (37 miles) of world-class cross-country and biathlon trails. And of course downhill skiing can be enjoyed at sites only a short drive away, including Lake Louise Mountain Resort, Sunshine Village, Ski Norquay, and Nakiska.

During warmer weather, residents also have several golf courses in and around town to explore, including, to name just three: Silvertip Resort, Banff Springs Golf Club, and Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course.

The town and area have plenty of events year-round to attend with family and friends, including the Canmore International Jazz Festival (June), the 24 Hours of Adrenalin mountain biking event (July), Shakespeare in the Mountains (July), the Canmore Folk Music Festival (August), Festival of Eagles, which celebrates the golden eagle migration (October), the Canmore Ice Climbing Festival (December), and more!

And what sort of weather can you expect? Canmore is a four-season community, with January highs averaging -5C (23F) and July highs averaging 22C (72F). And it annually receives an average of 244 centimetres (96.1 inches) of snow!
