Canora, Saskatchewan

Canora is a town of 2,200 in southeastern Saskatchewan. It is located 48 kilometers (30 miles) north of Yorkton, 235 kilometers (146 miles) northeast of Regina, and 311 kilometers (193 miles) southeast of Saskatoon.

The Canadian Northern Railway was once the lifeblood of the community, and the town's name was formed from the first letters of the company's name. This community is known as the "Heart of Good Spirit Country," and was rated "one of the top 10 places to live in Canada" in the May 2006 edition of CARP Magazine. The Ukrainian Girl statue is the first thing you'll see as you drive into town. Named Lesia, the statue is almost eight meters (25 feet) tall, and welcomes visitors with bread and salt, a traditional practice among Ukrainians. Canora is also home to the Ukrainian Heritage Museum and the Ukrainian Orthodox Heritage Church. The Canora Station House Museum is one of the oldest working railway stations in Saskatchewan, and also displays CN Rail memorabilia, a rural school room, pioneer artifacts, and other relics from the town's past. Your kids will love a visit to the Toy and Autograph Museum, which features one-of-a-kind toys and autographed photos.

Canora offers a host of recreational facilities in spite of its small size. During the summer, play a round on the nine-hole golf course, enjoy a game of tennis or beach volleyball, or take a dip in the outdoor swimming pool. The town also offers a skate park and several lovely parks. Winter in the prairies is synonymous with hockey, skating, and curling. The Canora Civic Centre offers excellent ice rinks and 500 seats for spectators, and the Sylvia Fedoruk Centre is the place to be for curling enthusiasts.

For a weekend of fishing and boating, visit nearby Crystal Lake, Good Spirit Lake, or Duck Mountain Provincial Park. These natural areas are also excellent for hiking, camping, hunting, ATVing, and snowmobiling.
