Cape Cod and Islands

With miles of unspoiled beaches and a landscape dotted by quiet fishing towns that exude America's colonial history, Cape Cod has long been a popular vacation locale. But this natural gem is more than just a tourist haven – it offers a quality of life and rich sense of community few other places can match.

The region's 246,737 residents have worked hard to protect their most valuable resources – the land and water – from being tainted by over-development. They created the Cape Cod Commission in 1990 to head up initiatives to preserve the area's unique heritage, character, and natural resources. The commission is also heading up the creation of the Cape Cod Pathways, a network of trails that will link the Cape's villages and towns from the coastal areas into the wooded interior. In addition, various community organizations have created an annual event, the Cape Cod Maritime Festival, to celebrate Cape Cod's marine heritage. With displays of boats, folk music concerts, and events such as knot tying and basket making, the festival really brings the Cape's history to life.

Of course, Cape Cod is known for its recreation. Trek up to the north of the peninsula to see the fabulous sand dunes. Created when European settlers cut down the trees, the dunes offer stunning ocean views. The area also features mysterious old buildings that you can explore such as the Old Harbor Life-Saving Station, home to Coast Guard officers in the late 19th century. Cape Cod also has plenty of kid-friendly attractions. Kids will love the Pirate Adventures on the Sea Gypsy, a seafaring adventure where they become part of the crew looking for long-lost treasures.

Cape Cod also has a rich arts community. The Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival and the Cape Museum of Fine Arts are just two of the many arts events highlighting local talent. Besides these local attractions, though, daily village life is by far the best thing about living in Cape Cod. A trip to the decades-old general store always brings you in touch with someone you know. Or, if not, you can get the local update from the storeowner. It's a lifestyle you've always been waiting for.
