Cape Dorset, Nunavut

Nestled between the crystalline waters of the Hudson Strait and the majestic Kinngait Mountain range, lies a small community of 1,148. The town is treasure trove of Inuit artisans, and its unique blend of art and culture was first "discovered" in the 1950s. Since then, Cape Dorset, or Kinngait (pronounced King-ite) in native Inuktitut, has been hailed as the capitol of Inuit art and is a major exporter of paintings, sculptures, and prints.

Of course, it's no wonder that this area has spawned some of Nunavut's leading artists: Inspiration is all around you in the landscape and seascape. Indeed, some could say there's no better place to view the landscape's yearly metamorphosis than at the Mallikjuaq Territorial Park. Starkly beautiful in the winter, the park erupts with an abundance of wildflowers – and the return of migratory birds – during the summer.

With the advance of art exportation has come an interesting blend of tradition and modernity. Strolling through the town, you'll see ATVs laden with pelts and modern homes decorated with traditional Inuit items. But while Cape Dorset continues to develop, its residents still cherish the traditions upon which the hamlet was founded.
