Cape Girardeau, Missouri, is located on the bank of the Mississippi River, 46 miles (74 kilometers) southwest of Carbondale, Illinois, and 112 miles (180 kilometers) southeast of St. Louis. It is part of Cape Girardeau County, and is home to 35,349 people.

Cape Girardeau has a long and rich history, and a walking tour of the city's Civil War and heritage sites is a great way of familiarizing yourself with the city. Notable sites include the Bollinger Mill State Historic Site, Fort D, the Red House Interpretive Center, and Glenn House. Local history is also brought to life by a series of vibrant murals scattered throughout the city.

Did you know that the Missouri State Flag was made and designed in Cape Girardeau? You'll learn this and more at the Cape River Heritage Museum, which focuses on 19th century industry and culture. This park serves as a memorial to the Cherokee Indians who lost their lives during the 1838 forced relocation.
